Palliative Care Insurance for BPL Patients with Cancer

The AP government has been fairly revolutionary in introducing the Rajeev Aarogyasri Community Health Insurance Scheme for families below the poverty line (BPL) in 23 districts in the state. The scheme seeks to improve the access of poor families to quality medical care for treatment of diseases involving hospitalization and surgery/therapy through an identified network of health care providers. The scheme covers heart, lung, liver, pancreatic and renal diseases and supports neuro-surgery and treatment for pediatric congenital malformations, burns, cancer, etc. An important component under cancer treatment is palliative care, finally giving such care its due importance.

It is significant and a welcome change that palliative care, which usually drained a hospital’s resources, can now bring money back to the hospital that provides such care.
